Saliva Testing & Oral Microbiome

Your mouth has been trying to tell you something. We finally have the tools to listen.

What Is Saliva Testing?

Saliva is not simply the fluid that keeps your mouth comfortable. It is a complex biological medium rich in proteins, enzymes, antimicrobial compounds, and microbial DNA — much of it originating directly from the bloodstream.

Saliva testing analyzes this fluid at a molecular level, identifying the specific bacteria and fungi living in your oral microbiome and translating that information into a precise, actionable picture of your oral and overall health.

The science behind it — now known as salivaomics — has advanced dramatically in recent years. What was once confined to research laboratories is now available in clinical practice. And what it reveals changes the way we understand disease, prevention, and the connection between the mouth and the rest of the body.

Your Mouth and Your Body

The oral microbiome is a community of over 800 bacterial and fungal species. When balanced, it supports digestion, immune defense, tissue integrity, and cardiovascular function. When disrupted, its effects reach far beyond the gum line.

Research has linked oral bacterial imbalance to over 50 systemic conditions, including:

Heart disease and atherosclerosis

Type 2 diabetes

Alzheimer's disease and cognitive decline

Rheumatoid arthritis

Adverse pregnancy outcomes

Colorectal cancer

Inflammatory bowel conditions

There is also a lesser-known but significant connection: a meaningful portion of the body's nitric oxide — critical for blood pressure regulation and neurological function — is produced with the help of specific oral bacteria. When the oral microbiome is disrupted, this capacity is compromised.

Saliva testing is not simply a dental tool. It is a window into systemic health.

What the Test Reveals

Using advanced DNA sequencing technology, the lab analyzes all microbial DNA in your saliva sample — identifying bacteria, fungi, and their relative abundance across 800+ species. Your results are interpreted against a large clinical database and translated into clear, personalized findings.

Your oral health report includes:

• Beneficial and harmful microbial species present in your mouth
• Microbial diversity and ecosystem balance
• Gum inflammation risk and its bacterial drivers
• Tooth decay risk and acid-producing species activity
• Bad breath profile — including the specific bacterial origin, of which there are six distinct types
• Nitric oxide production capacity and its cardiovascular implications
• Gut health impact based on oral bacteria entering the digestive tract

You leave not with a stack of raw data, but with a clear picture and a plan.

From Results to Action: Personalized Probiotics

The goal is not to eliminate bacteria. It is to restore balance.

Oral probiotics are not the same as gut probiotics. The strains that support intestinal health are not designed for the oral cavity. Oral probiotics are specifically selected to colonize the mouth, compete with harmful bacteria, and restore the microbial equilibrium that protects both teeth and systemic health.

Based on your saliva test results, our doctors design a targeted care plan that may include:

• Specific oral probiotic strains matched to your microbiome
• Personalized hygiene protocol adjustments
• Nutritional guidance targeting bacterial balance
• Follow-up testing to track progress over time
It is worth knowing that the vast majority of chronic bad breath cases have a bacterial origin — and most of them can be meaningfully resolved through properly targeted oral probiotics. For many patients, this alone is transformative.

Yes — your probiotics can be fully customized based on your results. This is the opposite of a generic recommendation.

Saliva testing is valuable for any patient invested in long-term health. It is especially meaningful for:

Bleeding gums or periodontal disease — active or historical

Frequent or recurring cavities — where microbial activity directly drives decay

Chronic bad breath that doesn't resolve with standard hygiene

Dry mouth — from medications, stress, or systemic conditions

Implant or orthodontic patients — where bacteria-trapping surfaces increase risk

Systemic conditions — diabetes, autoimmune disorders, cardiovascular disease

Pregnant patients — hormonal changes substantially alter oral bacteria

Cancer patients — particularly those undergoing radiation or chemotherapy

Smokers and tobacco users — whose saliva composition is measurably altered

Patients with chronic inflammation — systemic or oral

Stress-prone patients — chronic stress reduces salivary flow and its protective
properties

Who Benefits Most

Not sure if this is right for you? Your hygienist can discuss it at your next cleaning — it is the most natural place for this conversation to begin.

The Process

Simple, painless, and fits naturally into your visit.

Sample collection

A small saliva sample is collected by spitting into a tube. No instruments, no discomfort, no disruption to the oral environment. Unlike swabs, saliva reflects the microbiome of the entire mouth.

Laboratory analysis

The sample is sent to a certified lab for analysis. Results are typically returned within two to three weeks.

Results consultation

One of our doctors reviews the findings with you in a dedicated
appointment — walking through what was found, what it means, and what to do next.

How much does saliva testing costs?

$350 — includes the test, laboratory analysis, and a full doctor consultation to review your results and build a personalized care plan.

We recommend incorporating saliva testing into your regular dental cleaning routine — ideally once a year, or whenever a significant change in oral or systemic health occurs.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

01

Is saliva testing painful or uncomfortable?

Not at all. The sample is collected by spitting into a small tube. It takes minutes and requires no instruments or any disruption to your mouth.

02

How is this different from a regular dental checkup?

A standard cleaning and exam evaluates what is visible — the condition of your teeth, gums, and existing restorations. Saliva testing identifies the microbial activity driving disease before visible symptoms develop. The two complement each other naturally.

03

Can I have the test without a cleaning appointment?

Yes. It can be scheduled as a standalone consultation with one of our doctors. That said, integrating it with your cleaning is a natural fit — your hygienist can collect the sample during your visit and the results are reviewed at a
follow-up appointment.

04

How often should I test?

Once a year provides a meaningful baseline and allows for tracking changes over time. More frequent testing may be recommended for patients with active periodontal disease, systemic conditions, or those following a probiotic protocol who want to monitor progress.

05

What diseases can be identified via saliva testing?

Saliva testing can reveal risk factors and bacterial markers associated with gum disease, tooth decay, chronic bad breath, oral fungal overgrowth, and systemic conditions including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's
disease, and certain cancers. It is an early-warning and prevention tool — the earlier a pattern is identified, the more options we have.

06

Can I be tested for cancer via saliva testing?

Saliva testing can identify certain bacterial markers that research has associated with elevated cancer risk — including colorectal and pancreatic cancers. It is not a cancer diagnostic tool and does not replace medical testing, but it can surface patterns worth investigating further with your physician. Our team will always guide
you on appropriate next steps.

07

Can oral probiotics actually resolve bad breath?

In most cases, yes. Around 90% of chronic bad breath originates in the mouth, driven by specific bacterial strains that produce volatile sulfur compounds. Saliva testing identifies exactly which organisms are responsible — and there are six distinct types of halitosis, each with a different microbial origin. Once the source is known,
targeted oral probiotics can suppress the responsible bacteria and restore a healthier balance. Patients who have struggled with bad breath for years frequently find that a personalized probiotic protocol, based on their actual microbiome, resolves what mouthwash and brushing alone never could.

08

Can I have customized probiotics based on my saliva test?

Yes. Probiotic recommendations at our practice are never generic. Based on your results, our doctors select specific strains matched to your unique microbiome — targeting the precise bacterial imbalances identified in your report.
These are available through the practice or sourced with our guidance.

09

What if my results show something concerning?

A high pathogen score is a starting point, not a cause for alarm. Many patients with no visible symptoms carry elevated levels of disease- associated bacteria — and knowing this early is precisely the advantage this test offers. Our team will walk you through your results in full and design a plan that addresses whatever is found.

10

Does this replace blood work or medical diagnostics?

No. Saliva testing is a dental and wellness tool. Where findings suggest a systemic connection worth investigating, our doctors will recommend appropriate follow-up with your physician.

11

Is this covered by insurance?

Saliva testing is not currently covered by most dental insurance plans and is offered as an out-of-pocket wellness service. We are happy to provide documentation for patients who wish to submit for potential FSA or HSA reimbursement.
